Match Material & Geometry to the Motor Assembly

1 Rotor Layout & Magnetic Circuit

Define inner- or outer-rotor construction, available magnet volume, working air gap and pole arrangement. The active magnetic surface, magnetization direction and inspection datum should follow the motor drawing.

2 Ferrite, NdFeB & Molded Materials

Review ferrite options and rare-earth motor magnets, including NdFeB grades, against the required magnetic output, temperature and cost target. For molded rotors, select the magnetic compound and structural polymer separately according to fit, moisture and fluid exposure.

3 Mounting, Shaft & Retention Interfaces

Specify the bonding face, slot, carrier, sleeve or shaft interface. Agree segment spacing, adhesive thickness, concentricity, runout and retention loads before approving the magnet or assembled rotor.

Project Specification Guide

Use the motor layout, component drawing and duty cycle to define requirements. Final material grades, tolerances and magnetic limits are confirmed for each design.

Magnetic Materials Sintered ferrite, sintered NdFeB and injection-molded ferrite or NdFeB compounds, selected against the motor circuit and temperature.
Magnet Geometry Blocks, bars, arc segments, rings or molded rotor shapes. Define active surface, orientation, corner details and assembly clearance.
Rotor Construction Inner- or outer-rotor layout; surface-mounted, embedded or molded-in magnetic components as specified by the motor drawing.
Carriers, Shafts & Inserts Drawing-specified shafts, hubs, sleeves and polymer carriers. Identify bearing seats, locating diameters and mating materials.
Magnetization & Pole Layout Magnetization direction, pole count, polarity sequence, pole pitch and angular reference. State magnet piece count separately.
Geometry & Mechanical Fit Length, width, thickness, radius, OD or bore as applicable; specify magnet-seat tolerance, segment spacing and assembly datums.

Protection & Joining Coating, surface preparation, adhesive compatibility, encapsulation or sealing selected for the actual exposure and assembly route.
Sample & Quality Documents Drawing revision, first-article dimensions and magnetic results; define lot identification, inspection records and change-control requirements.
Quotation Inputs 2D/3D drawing, motor type, rotor layout, magnetic target, duty cycle, supply scope, sample quantity and annual demand.

What Changes Installed Magnetic Output?

Evaluate the installed magnet across operating temperature, mechanical variation and the intended speed range. A material grade alone does not define the finished motor output.

Air Gap & Segment Alignment

Rotor roundness, magnet thickness, segment spacing and adhesive thickness affect the installed air gap. Use the actual assembly datums when checking the magnet profile and field.

Temperature & Material Stability

Review grade selection and demagnetization risk at the motor operating point. For bonded or overmolded parts, include polymer expansion, moisture uptake and joining-material limits.

Pole Position, Balance & Retention

Agree pole-position and magnetic-waveform limits with the motor team. For assembled rotors, check retention, runout and balance at the drawing-specified conditions.

From Drawing Review
to Sample Approval

Send the magnet drawing together with the rotor layout, magnetic target and motor duty cycle. GX reviews geometry, material options, magnetization and mating interfaces, then agrees the sample quantity, tooling scope and inspection criteria before sample production.

Motor magnet production and testing equipment

Inspection & Batch Release

The agreed inspection plan defines dimensional and magnetic acceptance limits for each part. Measurement conditions, applicable assembly checks and required lot records are established before production, so sample approval and batch release use the same agreed criteria.

One DD Rotor Case, Multiple Design Variables

1 Washing-Machine Outer-Rotor Layout

The rotor reference shows discrete magnetic segments arranged around the inner circumference. For a 48-piece DD design, define the individual segment geometry, locating features, polarity sequence and assembly pitch. The piece count alone does not establish the number of magnetic poles.

2 Adapt the Magnet to Each Application

Fan motors, appliance drives and other permanent-magnet rotors may need different blocks, arcs, rings or molded parts. GX reviews the magnetic circuit, temperature, gap and mounting method for each application; the same DD segment is not assumed to fit every motor.

Motor Magnet Technical FAQs

Answers on ferrite and neodymium motor magnets, rotor geometry, magnetization and OEM sampling requirements.

What types of magnets are used in electric motors?
Permanent-magnet motors can use sintered ferrite, sintered NdFeB or bonded magnetic materials. Blocks, arc segments, rings and molded rotors serve different layouts. Motor torque, available magnet volume, operating temperature and retention requirements guide the selection.
Should a motor use ferrite or neodymium magnets?
Ferrite can suit designs with sufficient magnet volume and a cost-sensitive material requirement. NdFeB is often evaluated for more compact magnetic circuits. Compare the actual grades, geometry, demagnetizing conditions and temperature rather than material names alone.
Do direct-drive washing-machine motors always use 48 magnets?
No. The number of separate magnets and the number of magnetic poles depend on the rotor design and magnetization scheme. A 48-piece arrangement describes one component layout; it is not a universal specification for direct-drive motors.
Can rectangular magnet blocks be used in an outer rotor?
Yes, where the rotor design accommodates the block profile, magnetization direction, segment spacing and required air-gap geometry. Other designs use curved segments or rings. The magnet seat and retention method must be reviewed with the complete rotor layout.
What determines a motor magnet’s operating temperature?
Material grade, magnetic-circuit operating point, demagnetizing field and exposure time all matter. Coatings, adhesive, polymer binders and carriers may introduce separate limits. Specify continuous and peak magnet temperatures together with the intended duty cycle.
Why use injection-molded magnetic rotors?
Injection molding can combine magnetic powder and a polymer binder in a shaped rotor or multipole ring. Suitable designs can incorporate shafts or inserts. Magnetic output, polymer stability, insert location and pole pattern must be evaluated together.
Can GX supply magnets together with rotor components?
GX can review magnet-only supply or drawing-based rotor assemblies with agreed shafts, carriers, hubs or sleeves. The quotation defines included components, joining operations and inspection scope. Complete motors and control electronics are not implied.
What should I send for a motor magnet quotation?
Send the 2D/3D drawing, motor type, rotor layout, material or magnetic target, magnetization requirement, temperature and exposure conditions. Include mating interfaces, inspection method, sample quantity and annual demand so sampling and recurring supply can be reviewed.
