Match the Magnet to the Medical Equipment Assembly

1 Drive Magnet or Sensor Target

For a drive magnet, review the motor circuit and pole arrangement. For a sensing target, define field direction, sensor axis, operating air gap and mechanical datum. Each function needs its own magnetic acceptance method.

2 Magnetic Compound & Engineering Polymers

Ferrite and NdFeB compounds are available for molded magnetic parts. PA6, PA12, PPS and other suitable polymers can be evaluated for the binder or structural overmold according to temperature, moisture, cleaning agents and fluid exposure.

3 Shaft, Coupling & Retention Interfaces

Carbon steel, stainless steel, brass and drawing-specified inserts can be evaluated for shafts and interfaces. Define runout, concentricity, retention force or torque, and the joining route used in the final equipment assembly.

Medical Magnet Specification Guide

Use the component drawing and operating conditions to define requirements. Material combinations and acceptance limits are confirmed for each non-implantable medical equipment project.

What Affects Magnetic Performance in Medical Equipment?

A medical equipment magnet works inside a motor, sensor, coupling or separation system. Evaluate the installed component across assembly variation and the actual duty cycle.

Air Gap & Alignment

Sensor spacing, rotor clearance and magnetic-to-mechanical alignment change the field seen by the system. Compare samples at the intended measurement position and datum.

Heat, Cleaning & Material Stability

Assess magnetic output together with polymer expansion, moisture uptake and any cleaning or fluid exposure. Define continuous temperature, peaks and cycling separately.

Pole Pattern, Balance & Retention

Control pole location and magnet retention under rotation or reversing loads. For high-speed rotors, runout and balance criteria must be tied to the actual rotor geometry and speed.

Medical Magnet FAQs

Answers on medical equipment magnets, motor rotors, sensors, magnetic separation and OEM sample requirements.

Where are magnets used in medical devices?
Permanent magnets can provide motor torque, position or speed sensing, magnetic coupling and magnetic-bead handling in non-implantable medical equipment. Examples include pump drives, respiratory blowers, surgical actuators, dental and laboratory motors, IVD separation modules, encoders and valves. The magnet form depends on the complete equipment architecture.
Should medical equipment use ferrite or neodymium magnets?
Ferrite can suit designs where cost, corrosion resistance and available magnet volume are the main constraints. NdFeB is often evaluated when compact size or higher magnetic output is required. Compare the actual material grade, manufacturing route, installed gap and temperature rather than selecting by material name alone.
Why use injection molded magnets in medical equipment?
Injection molding combines magnetic powder with a polymer binder and can form multipole rings, shaped sensor targets and rotor features. Suitable designs can incorporate shafts, sleeves or carriers, reducing secondary assembly steps while allowing the pole pattern and geometry to follow the equipment design.
Can GX supply magnets for medical pumps and respiratory equipment?
GX can review ferrite, NdFeB, molded magnetic rotors, multipole rings and shaft-based components for pump, blower and actuator motors. The project should define speed, temperature, fluid or gas exposure, magnetic target, mechanical interface and acceptance method before material selection.
What should be defined for cleaning, disinfection or sterilization exposure?
Specify the actual process, chemistry, temperature, cycle count and whether the magnetic component is directly exposed. Material, coating, binder, adhesive and insert compatibility must be evaluated for that process. A generic 'medical' label is not a substitute for project-specific exposure data.
Can GX supply magnets for IVD magnetic separation?
GX can supply NdFeB blocks, rings and drawing-based magnetic assemblies for magnetic-bead handling and separation equipment. Define the working gap, field target, array geometry, bead process window and measurement method so the magnetic circuit can be reviewed against the instrument layout.
Does this page cover implantable or patient-contact magnets?
This page focuses on magnets and motor components for non-implantable medical equipment. Implantable or patient-contact components can require medical-device-specific quality systems, biocompatibility and validation that are not implied by the capabilities shown here.
What should I send for a medical magnet quotation?
Send the 2D/3D drawing, equipment function, magnetic target or test method, operating temperature, cleaning or fluid exposure, shaft/carrier interfaces, sample quantity and annual demand. For sensor or coupling designs, include the air gap and mechanical datum used for magnetic acceptance.
